Chapter 5, The Fright of the Full Moon
My mother kept murmuring, which is not surprising. I don't know who we might have offended. If we have been rude on our way to work, please be lenient with us. The more she murmured, the more frightened she became. At that moment, Xiao Wang trembled and said, "Sister Liu, can we stop murmuring? I'm really scared." My mother, with a choked voice, replied, "Xiao Wang, I'm not joking, I also feel like someone is holding me back."
My mother and Xiao Wang involuntarily looked in the direction she pointed, and faintly, they indeed saw lights over there. Just as I turned back to say thank you, I suddenly realized that the woman had vanished. Yes, she had simply disappeared; in the blink of an eye, a person was gone from sight.
Upon seeing Xiao Wang's disheveled appearance, Xiao Lu couldn't help but laugh, "What's wrong with you? Did you think you had a concussion just because you fell into a bird's nest? I don't even know you!" At that moment, my mother and Xiao Wang finally confirmed that Xiao Lu was fine. My mother said, "Xiao Lu, don't say anything. Let's go back to work first. Do you know where this is?"
Xiao Wang thought for a moment and could only reluctantly nod, saying: "Alright, I will take a look"
The man stands opposite the woman, and due to the woman blocking the view, it is difficult to see what he looks like
When my mother heard this, she thought that Xiao Lu was fine and had come up to deliberately scare her. She immediately slapped him and scolded, "Xiao Lu, you shameless one, what are you doing? How has Liu Jie treated you? What has she done to wrong you? You were late, and I kept it from her. Whatever you lack, Liu Jie has never said a word against you. What kind of madness are you suffering from?"
After walking for about ten minutes, the thick fog gradually dispersed, and the view ahead became clearer. I could see two figures standing on the path ahead, faintly resembling a man and a woman.
My mother said: "Xiao Wang, why don't you let Liu Jie pull you, and you can slowly turn around to take a look. You're separated from me in the middle, so what are you looking at that would scare you?"
Xiao Wang originally had polio, which made him even more afraid of walking slowly. Xiao Wang said: "Sister Liu, why don't you turn around and take a look, in case there really is something."
My mother said, "It can't be something dirty, right? It's already late at night, and we've had enough for today. Let's not encounter anything scary." Xiao Wang thought for a moment and replied, "It can't be, those two might just be here on a date. Besides, if we don't hurry, we still don't know how Lu Ge is doing."
Let me introduce my mother. Although my mother had a fiery personality in her youth, she was also a beauty, standing around 1.7 meters tall and weighing about 100 jin, which would be considered a standard beauty even today. However, after getting married and having me, her weight began to rise sharply. After giving birth to me, my mother was unable to regain her figure, and her weight has remained around 180 jin.
Upon hearing this, my mother felt even more that something had happened behind us. Even if my mother's nerves were as thick as a highway, she knew what was happening now, so how could she dare to look back
But that man hurriedly stood up and rushed towards my mother, saying as he walked, "Sister Liu, what’s wrong? Why are you crying here?" After hearing this, my mother took a closer look and said, "Isn’t this Xiao Lu?"
At that moment, Xiao Wang said, "Sister Liu, are we not caught in a ghost wall?" My mother turned around, intending to discuss what to do with Xiao Wang, but upon seeing his appearance, she couldn't help but laugh. As for Xiao Wang, due to having polio as a child, his legs were already thinner than those of a normal person, and he usually walked on tiptoes. He also didn't expect my mother to be so strong, so throughout the journey, he stumbled and fell, his clothes torn and tattered. His face was a mix of sweat and tears, and he had no idea how he had bumped into a tree, ending up with a bird's nest upside down on his forehead. His pants were also in tatters. When my mother laughed, she felt less scared, and she said, "Xiao Wang? Where are we running off to?"
The two of them were increasingly uneasy as they ran. Normally, the distance from the cemetery to the workplace is only 1.5 miles, yet in such a short time, they had already run nearly 2 miles. Adding in the distance they had walked at the beginning, there was no way they could have reached the workplace now. What was going on? With the surroundings enveloped in a white haze, my mother had no idea where they had run off to.
My mother felt a sudden buzz in her head, and she couldn't utter a single word that was on the tip of her tongue. It was as if this woman was inexplicably silent. Xiao Wang stood behind my mother, trembling as he said, "Excuse me, big sister, we seem to have lost our way. Could you tell us where the construction well is located?" The woman remained silent, her eyes still fixed on my mother, and she raised her hand to point in a direction.
Although she is somewhat plump, my mother has always worked hard and is full of energy. How can I describe her to you? Since I can remember, my mother has always been the one fighting with my father (my father says he doesn't fight with women, haha, and for this reason, I believe my dad is a real man). So when my mother drags Xiao Wang along, it looks just like she's pulling a little chick.
Because Xiao Wang saw that it was actually Xiao Lu who was tugging at my mother's clothes, Xiao Lu still had that ashen face, with wide-open eyes. The corners of his mouth seemed to be hanging with a strange smile
At this moment, my mother finally remembered that there was still a little Lu waiting to be rescued. There was no choice but to brace herself and move forward
At that moment, my mother shifted her body to the side, and when Xiao Wang turned his head to look, his expression changed immediately
At that very moment when they turned around, the man standing opposite the woman in white suddenly fell to the ground with a thud. The two of them were so frightened that they were left dumbfounded; my mother felt as if her legs had lost all control, unable to move even a single step.
Throughout the journey, my mother and Xiao Wang did not say much, as we needed to hurry to the workplace to take over. If they did not go, there would be no one to take over, and the previous shift could not go home
The fright of that night caused my mother to reach her breaking point, and she burst into tears. Xiao Wang also completely broke down and started crying as well. At that moment, the man lying on the ground suddenly sat up.
My mother thought it over and realized that it was inappropriate to stay in the cemetery at this late hour, so she took little Wang by the hand and walked along the path towards the library.
The exposed skin is as snow-white as cotton, and the hair is loosely draped over the body.
Xiao Wang looked around and said, "I don't know either. This place is surrounded by graves; how would I know where this is? Why don't we keep moving forward? We can't just stay here all the time"
My mother was tugging at Xiao Wang's collar, following closely behind him. After just a few steps, she felt her own collar being pulled, and the footsteps following her were shaky, as if someone was truly behind her, tugging at her and walking along.
Xiao Lu looked around and said, "Isn't this Well No. 8? Why did you all come here as well? Never mind, let's not talk about it for now, hurry back to work."
At that moment, Mother was so frightened that she cried. Little Wang suddenly knelt down with a thud, repeatedly bowing his head, mumbling: "Brother Lu! We usually have a good relationship, what's going on with you? This isn't how you should act! You can scare me, but Sister Liu has always treated us so well. Why are you scaring her too?"
My mother walked up to the woman but did not hear the conversation between the two. She just stood there quietly, took a deep breath, and reached out to pat the woman's shoulder.
As soon as he sat up, my mother, who was closest, was startled and nearly fainted
This feeling is akin to wanting to relieve oneself, yet being unable to finish; looking down to find oneself having produced an alarming amount of waste, resembling a toilet full of intestines.
Looking at his face, it was the same as before, except a bit paler, nothing else. At this moment, Xiao Wang also recognized that it was Xiao Lu, and he asked timidly, "Is it you, Brother Lu?"
As soon as my mother saw Xiao Wang's expression, she was drenched in cold sweat. Trembling, she asked, "Xiao Wang, what happened? What did you see? Speak up!"
Just after my mother finished speaking, before she could continue, I saw Xiao Lu's face. Since Xiao Lu was right behind my mother, this turn essentially brought our faces almost nose to nose.
The distance grew closer, and the woman, with her back to my mother, was wearing a pure white dress
At that moment, my mother let out a sharp scream, turned around, and pulled Xiao Wang to run. It was mentioned earlier that Xiao Wang had a slight case of polio, making his legs not very agile. My mother was pulling him along at a fast pace, while he stumbled and ran awkwardly behind her.
My mother was feeling uneasy, thinking that this road was only used for going to work or visiting graves. What were a man and a woman doing here in the middle of the night? So, my mother asked Xiao Wang if he had seen them. Xiao Wang looked carefully and said, "Liu Jie, it seems there is a man and a woman standing up ahead. Let's go over and ask where this is."
The woman slowly turned her head, revealing a delicate face, pale without a trace of color. Her small mouth, not large, was painted with bright red lipstick, as if she had drunk the blood of a dead child with her mother. A pair of large eyes fixed intently on my mother.
There was no other choice; the two could only leave Xiao Lu behind and continue forward. Since the road had not yet been repaired, they had to walk through this graveyard for their commutes. The path was narrow, and they could not walk side by side, so one had to go in front of the other. This time, Xiao Wang walked in front, as the young man was genuinely frightened.
